Indian Car Market Shake-Up: May 2025 Sales Crown New Kings and Challenge Old Thrones!
The Indian car market is in the midst of a storm, with top positions shifting and old kings struggling to hold onto their crowns. May 2025 sales data is out, and it’s nothing short of a game of chess. Tata, a superstar in the top three for years, has slipped to fourth place. Mahindra, once known only as an SUV hero, has now surged to second. Toyota continues to surprise everyone, and the rivalry between Hyundai and Tata has become even more intense. Let’s look at each brand’s sales and find out who the true king of 2025 is.
Shifting Tides: Top Brands in Focus
14. Jeep: Off-Road King, City Struggles
Jeep, renowned for its formidable off-roaders like the Compass and Meridian, landed at 14th place this month. In May, Jeep sold only 276 units, a 1% dip from April’s 278 units. The brand’s struggle in urban settings is largely due to its higher price points, as Indian customers increasingly seek affordable SUVs.
13. Citroën: Still Searching for Gear
Citroën held the 13th spot, selling 333 cars in May, a 2% decrease from 339 units in April. Low brand awareness and a weak service network are Citroën’s main hurdles. They need to focus on marketing and expanding their service network to pick up pace in the race.
12. Nissan: How Far Can the Magnite Go?
Nissan slipped to 12th place, with only 10,354 cars sold in May, a significant 26% drop from 10,825 in April. Nissan currently relies on a single model, the Magnite. This compact SUV starts at ₹6 lakh and features a 1-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 99 bhp. Such a steep decline with only one model is concerning. Nissan should consider introducing an electric car or a new affordable SUV.
11. Renault: Dated Charm, Modern Demands
Renault secured the 11th position, selling 2,502 cars in May, a 4% decline from 2,602 units in April. Renault offers models like the Triber, Kiger, and Kwid. The Triber, a 7-seater MPV starting at ₹6 lakh, is a decent vehicle. However, customers now demand modern features like sunroofs and wireless charging. Renault needs to introduce an electric car or significant updates to its existing lineup, or it risks falling further behind.
10. Volkswagen (VW): Unmatched Build Quality
Volkswagen claimed the 10th spot, with 2,848 cars sold in May, a marginal 0.1% decrease from 2,851 units in April. VW’s Taigun and Virtus are celebrated for their exceptional build quality.
9. Honda: Stuck in Sedans, Needs an SUV
Honda showed some improvement this month, landing at ninth place with 3,950 cars sold in May, an impressive 18% increase from 3,360 units in April. Honda’s City and Amaze dominate the sedan segment. The new Amaze, starting at ₹8 lakh, offers stiff competition to the Maruti Dzire. However, Honda lacks a strong SUV or an electric car, a segment highly favoured by current buyers. Introducing an affordable SUV could propel Honda into the top ranks.
Strong Comebacks and Fierce Battles: Mid-Rankers Shine
8. MG Motor: Electrifying Comeback
MG Motor is making a strong comeback at eighth place, with 6,304 cars sold in May, an 8% increase from 5,839 units in April. MG’s star is the ZS EV, starting at ₹14 lakh and offering a 450 km range. Its futuristic design and large touchscreen have captivated buyers. MG also updated its Hector and Astor, contributing to increased sales. However, their service network remains a weakness.
7. Skoda: Solid Cars, Rising Sales
Skoda is at seventh place, selling 6,740 cars in May, an 8% decrease from 7,302 units in April. Despite this, Skoda’s sales have seen an upward trend in recent months, primarily driven by the new Slavia compact SUV. Starting at ₹8.25 lakh, the Slavia’s 1-liter TSI engine delivers 113 bhp and competes fiercely with the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and XUV 3XO. Skoda cars are also known for their robust build quality.
6. Kia: Anticipation for Updates Fuels Future Growth
Kia holds the sixth position, but its sales declined by 5.54% in May. 22,315 cars were sold in May, compared to 23,623 in April. Kia’s Seltos, Sonet, and Carens are popular in the market. The dip in sales was due to customers awaiting Kia’s new models and updates for the Carens, Clavis, and Seltos. Now that these have launched, Kia is expected to overtake Toyota next month.
5. Toyota: The Name of Trust, Boosting Sales
Toyota put on an impressive show, shining at fifth place with 29,280 cars sold in May, a significant 18% increase from 24,330 units in April. Toyota’s Innova Crysta, HyRyder, and Fortuner are market favourites. The Innova Crysta, starting at ₹20 lakh, is highly regarded for its reliability. A major factor in the sales surge is the HyRyder, a rebadged version of the Maruti Grand Vitara.
The Top 4: Battle for Supremacy
4. Tata Motors: A Slip in the Race, Facing Delivery Challenges
Tata Motors, a consistent presence in the top three, slipped to fourth place like a racer falling behind in the last lap. In May, 41,557 cars were sold, an 8% drop from 45,199 units in April. Tata’s Punch, Nexon, and Harrier are popular, with the Nexon starting at ₹8 lakh. The sales decline is attributed to a 2% drop in demand for the Nexon EV and Punch EV, coupled with delivery delays. However, Tata cars are highly praised for their safety, with the Nexon receiving a 5-star rating.
3.Hyundai: Holding Third, but Facing a Slight Dip, the third position in the May 2025 sales
Hyundai is at third place, but its sales decreased by 1% in May. 43,861 cars were sold in May, compared to 44,740 in April. Hyundai’s Creta, Venue, and Exter are making waves in the market, with the Creta EV also creating a buzz. Hyundai cars are known for their advanced features like sunroofs and wireless charging, which resonate well with customers.
2. Mahindra: The SUV King’s Phenomenal Rise!
Mahindra truly made headlines this month, surging to a remarkable second place in the May 2025 sales figures. Their performance was akin to a Thar confidently overtaking everyone on the highway! In May, Mahindra sold an impressive 52,431 cars, showing a slight but significant increase of 0.1% from the 52,330 units sold in April.
1. Maruti Suzuki: The Undisputed King of the Market!
Maruti Suzuki remains the undisputed king of the market. In May, 135,962 cars were sold, although this was a 2% decrease from 138,404 units in April. Maruti’s Swift, Dzire, Brezza, and Eeco dominate every segment. The Swift starts at ₹6.50 lakh. The slight dip in sales was due to reduced demand for the Alto and Celerio. Maruti’s service network is unparalleled, consistently attracting customers. Maruti now needs to shift into a higher gear in the electric segment to further solidify its crown.
